Serena Abeles Raab - Holocaust Education Center
Michlalah - Jerusalem College
Michlalah-Jerusalem College is a religious college located in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood of Jerusalem. The Holocaust Education Center, which is part of Michlalah's Jewish studies program, offers courses and activities on various subjects pertaining to the Holocaust and its significance for the Jewish people.
The Center's activities start with academic courses and research about the period and focus on historical information, familiarity with various types of sources, research methods, critical reading of books and articles, and up-to-date historiography.
What makes the program unique, however, is its multidisciplinary nature, incorporating history, Jewish thought, and Jewish law; methods of teaching specific topics; the use of multimedia; the use of visual media in teaching; the Holocaust in literature and art, and more.
Emphasis is placed on religious Jewry before, during, and after the Holocaust-a subject that has not been given the attention it deserves. Students look at Holocaust-era sermons and responsa; dilemmas of morality, values, and faith; and the ways in which Jews coped with religious issues on a daily basis.
The Center is headed by Esther Farbstein, a Holocaust researcher and author of the book B'Seter Ra'am (Hidden in thunder). Dvora Mann, a scholar specializing in Holocaust literature, is in charge of educational projects. The staff also includes rabbis and lecturers who conduct research on the Holocaust.
