Hidden in Thunder

Despite the unspeakable horrors they experienced, many Jews retained their faith during the Holocaust. They strove to observe Jewish rituals and remain on a high ethical plane even as the Nazis did all they could to dehumanize them.

Hidden in Thunder covers a broad spectrum of topics concerning the challenges these Jews faced in the ghettos and camps. It portrays the roles of the rabbis and hasidic rebbes who dealt with heartrending halachic questions and moral issues, such as drawing up lists for transports, hiding children with gentile families and the problem of agunot. Special attention is given to the efforts to rebuild the survivors' lives after liberation.

The author's historical approach is enhanced by her solid knowledge of Jewish values that influenced the Jews' responses during those dark days. The historical documentation, some of it presented here for the first time, reveals a rich pattern of life that existed in spite of the pattern imposed by the Nazis
